Game Review: Rebuild

Haven't found the time to do much miniature gaming lately. It's usually what I do to pass the time when the wife and kids are out of town but they've been staying home lately. In the meantime though I discovered a pretty cool little zombie themed flash game that I'd like to share with any readers out there. It's called Rebuild and it can be found here: http://twotowersgames.com/games/rebuild-zombie/

Rebuild is a turn based strategy game in which you start with a small band of survivors and you slowly rebuild and reclaim a town overrun with the walking dead. The graphics are pretty simple but the strategy elements have some depth. I like that there are multiple ways to win (through science, military might, or by forming a government) and the buildings feel well balanced in terms of usefulness. A very enjoyable game that I've had fun with even after multiple plays. My only complaint is that scavengers felt useless. Maybe it was just my play style, but scavenging seemed like a waste of manpower that could be better spent on other tasks. I recommend keeping a couple on hand for scouting the surroundings but focusing your efforts on training soldiers, scientists and builders instead.

Day 10 Country Farm Discover

When the zombies came not everyone was terribly upset. Bubba and his girlfriend Tina had been having a great time riding around shooting zeds from the back of a pickup truck and they had even picked up some nice automatic weapons and found Bubba's sister Jenny to boot. The only problem was they were starting to get hungry. Luckily there was a small farm just off the road up ahead.

The setup: A standard 'Discover' scenario with a handful of buildings. A few zombies had already been drawn by the sound of their pickup.
The cast: Bubba's the star in the bed of the truck. He's a rep 5 star civilian with the agile and brawler qualities. He's armed with a semi-automatic rifle. Tina is driving. She's a rep 4 civilian with the transporter quality. She's armed with a SMG. Jenny is in the passenger seat. She's a rep 3 civilian with the slow quality. She's armed with a machine pistol.

Turn 1 6/3
While the zombies move closer, Bubba refuses to get out of the truck until he's finished his beer.

Turn 2 3/2
Team Bubba reluctantly dismounts and moves away from the truck. The vehicle was attracting too many of the walking dead. They open fire with Bubba and Tina each killing a zed each and Jenny knocking one down. The zombies move closer and another zombie is spawned from the shooting. The knocked down zombie (closest to Bubba) stands up and looks mad.

Turn 3 3/4
Two zombies charge Bubba. He passes 2d6 and shoots one down. Jenny only passed 1d6 so she doesn't fire. Bubba and the remaining zombie fight to a draw despite Bubba's six dice. Maybe he shouldn't have drank that last beer.

Team Bubba activates and heads for the barn, firing as they move. Bubba puts a round through the skull of the zombie he was just fighting and his little sister Jenny holds her fire as she follows after him, making a snide comment about the zombie suffering a delayed death from the smell of Bubba's breath. Tina is close behind and she puts three rounds in the last remaining zed. Unfortunately she only knocks him down. This brought up a question for me. Does a second shot at the same figure count as a 'second target' or does the second target penalty only apply when splitting your shots between two figures. I played it without the penalty but I was wondering how others were handling it.
Turn 4 6/6
Random event! Unfortunately it's dependant on us having just completed a search of a building so nothing happens.

Turn 5 3/1
Team Bubba moves to the barn. Bubba is momentarily hopeful as he thinks he hears the bleating of a sheep coming from inside. The lone zombie stands back up.

Turn 6 6/6
Random Event! We can end the scenario and hunker down in the next building but since we haven't found any resources yet Team Bubba declines. I can see how this might be a godsend in an urban game where the streets might be swarming with the undead.

Turn 7 5/4
Team Bubba enters the barn and finds that three civilians are already calling it home. There leader is a rep 5 with an assault rifle and he is less than thrilled to have visitors. He's willing to trade but Team Bubba doesn't have any resources. Bubba considers challenging the man to a spitting contest for the rifle or trading his sister for it but ultimately Team Bubba leaves empty handed. Too bad. That rifle would have looked good in the gun rack on the back of the truck.  Team Bubba uses the remainder of it's move to move over towards the nearby shed. (Unfortunately I had technical problems with my camera for the rest of this game). The lone zombie moves a little closer.

Turn 8 4/3
Team Bubba enters the shed and meets two more civilians huddling in the dark. Apparently they like the skin that Jenny is showing and they decide that they're willing to join Team Bubba permanently. One is a rep 4 runt with a shotgun and the other is an unarmed rep 2 liability. On the plus side he has the marksmanship talent. He could be a useful ally if I can get him a bolt action rifle and a couple of rep increases. Before leaving the shed everyone picks up a tool of some type to use as an improvised hand weapon.

Turn 9 6/4
Zed moves closer

Turn 10 4/3
Everyone searches the shed. The new marksman finds some food but everyone else finds nada. That -2 for being in a rural area is brutal!

Turn 11 5/6
That lone zed is finally caught up so I let the runt try out his shotgun. He blasts the zed to kingdom come... and generates two zombies in the process. Shotguns seem to be counter productive at killing zombies.

Turn 12 2/1 Bubba ans Jenny gun down the two zeds while the others go search the garage. It's abandoned and no resources are found.

With no more zombies on the board things were pretty easy. Team Bubba searched the farm house and convinced a survivor to join them temporarily. He even shared a can of beans he had hidden away. (New survivor was the only one who found anything while searching). Tina managed to hotwire the car in front of the garage and generate a couple of zeds in the process. This was a good thing since it gave us an extra resource to trade and it gave the chance for the new marksman to kill a zed with a shovel so he would be eligible for a rep increase. In the end Team Bubba had only found two units of food, but they had gained two members as well. This was going to be a problem. Before leaving they traded the sedan and their beloved pickup to the civilians in the barn for another unit of food and a bolt action rifle for our marksman member.

Only thing left to do was rolls for rep. The new marksman got an increase. I let Tina roll as well since she had hotwired a car (I guess that is like finding a resource). The others had failed their mission because they hadn't found a resource. Brutal! The rural area modifier really killed me on this one. Sadly Bubba rolls a 1 and is now a rep 4 star. Luckily Tina got an increase and is now rep 5.

In the beginning

I'm jumping on the zombie gaming blog bandwagon. Here I'll be posting miniature reviews and chronicling my ATZ batreps. I'll be starting with a short rural campaign before jumping into a "day 1" style campaign with a star representing myself. I'm doing a rural campaign first because the rural setting has an easier learning curve and the games need fewer minis and terrain models. I've got a fair selection of cardstock buildings but I'm lacking in painted minis so far.

So we begin with the redneck adventures of Bubba, his sister Jenny and his girlfriend Tina.
